First Irukandji Stings of the Season

Please be advised that we have had 3 confirmed Irukandji stings at Town Beach in the past three days. People are asked not to swim at Town Beach, whilst the beach closed stinger signs are displayed.

The following rules for safer swimming help reduce the risk of incidents involving marine stingers and should be promoted to the public
  • Always swim at a patrolled beach, between the red and yellow flags.
  • Look for and observe warning signs
  • If in doubt ask a lifeguard or Beach Inspector
  • Beware of the months of stinger season (higher risk period) in tropical waters (November - April)
  • Wear protective clothing, particularly pregnant women, the elderly and people with high blood pressure.

Stinger suits

Wearing protective clothing has proven to be very effective in the protection against marine stingers. Lycra stinger suits and wetsuits are an effective means of protection against a major sting from marine stingers (stings may still occur on exposed areas such as the feet and hands, but are significantly less likely). If stinger suits are not available long sleave rash shirts and panty-hose will also reduce the chance of being stung.
Cable Beach
Each year far fewer incidents of Irukandji stings are recorded at Cable Beach than other beaches within the Broome town-site. Cable Beach has a lifeguard service during the tourist season and a Beach Inspector service during the Wet Season. The Broome Rangers recommend Cable Beach as a better alternative during the Wet Season / Stinger Season.

Wild Woolly Weather

Did we all enjoy the storm last night? This is what we love about Broome!

An amazing, thunderous storm hit Broome just after midnight last night, making for perfect "laying-in-bed-listening-to-the-rain" weather.

It was flashing, banging and clanging, but we all awoke to perfectly blue skies this morning.

Check out the Bureau of Meteorology shots from 1.30am, showcasing the storm, and then again at 7.30am, showing our beautiful clear skies.

Don't you just love this weather!?

Online travel company, Expedia, has come up with a list of the world's top 10 beaches. Some are a little out of the way and others are nestled neatly in popular tourist destinations. Expedia.com.au marketing manager Louise Crompton says that while Australians are spoilt for choice when it comes to coastline there are great beaches in other parts of the world.
"Australians know better than most that nothing beats the fabulous feeling after a day at the beach," Ms Crompton said.
"There are some great beach experiences to be had in other parts of the world and it was a difficult job narrowing the list down to our top 10. Not only will you find a special beach experience at each of these destinations but great deals are also to be found."
First on the list is Cable Beach in Broome. With 22.5 km of white sand and turquoise water, the beach is almost completely flat and is perfect for surfing and swimming. With an atmospheric last outpost feel, travellers are free to explore the beach by foot or four-wheel-drive. The sunsets will amaze any visitor and travellers can even take a camel ride along the white sandy beach. Stay at the five star Pinctada Cable Beach Resort and Spa. Rooms start at $287 per night.
In Krabi, Ao Nang Beach is known as the best beach in Thailand. It has a central location in the Andaman Sea and incredible scenery. Travellers who want to fill the day while on the beach can snorkel, scuba-dive or kayak. Ao Nang is also close to many restaurants and bars. Railey Beach is also just a 15 minute ferry ride from Ao Nang and both are about two hours from Phuket. Expedia recommends staying at the four-star Krabi Cha-da Resort. Rooms start from $108 per night.
Third on the list is Nha Trang Beach in Vietnam. Known as Vietnam's premier traditional seaside resort town this party and relaxation destination is surrounded by scenic mountains. The long flat beach is a gateway to a group of quieter islands that offer incredible snorkelling and scuba diving. Stay at the four star Yasaka Saigon Nha Trang for $73 per night.
In Fiji, Expedia recommends Yasawa Island. Paradise Beach is the pick here, as well as Champagne Beach. The limestone caves of this other Eden were made famous by the 1980s film The Blue Lagoon. Visitors can look forward to beaches and rugged scenery all throughout Yasawa Island. The 4.5 star Outrigger on the Lagoon has rooms from $220 per night.
Buzios is a peninsula of Brazil surrounded by 8km islands and beaches. Azeda Beach is the recommended beach of the peninsula and was made famous by a visit from Bridget Bardot in the 60s. Featuring many restaurants, bars and boutiques, the 300m beach is also perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Stay at the four star Porto Bay Glenzhaus. Rooms start from $312 per night.
Number six on the list is Lanikai Beach in Oahu, Hawaii. The four-star Hotel Renew has rooms from $164 per night. The beach is 30 minutes drive from Honolulu and offers a perfect view of the Na Mokulua Islands. The English translation of 'Lanikai Beach' is 'heavenly sea' so visitors are sure to be delighted.
Isola Bella Beach on the east coast of Sicily and has views of Mt Etna. Near Italian beach town of Taormina the beach is a popular destination for celebrities and offers the quintessential pebbled beach with crystal clear water. At certain tides visitors can walk to the islet nature reserve of Isola Bella. Expedia recommends the four star Hotel Tritone. Rooms start from $131 per night.
Clifton Beach in Cape Town, South Africa is on the Expedia list and is actually four adjacent beaches separated by giant granite boulders. With a backdrop of the Twelve Apostles, Clifton Beach is a place where the rich and famous gather. Beachgoers can relax with a game of volleyball or frisbee before a quick dip in the Atlantic. Rooms at Bantry Bay Luxury Suites start from $200 per night.
Number nine on the Expedia list is Seven Mile Beach in Jamaica. This is the longest continuous stretch of beach in the heart of the Caribbean and has majestic views of cliffs and rock formations. There is plenty to do for the whole family with the usual snorkelling and swimming and kayaking as well as glass bottom boat rides. Stay at the three and a half star Tensing Pen Hotel. Rooms start from $187 per night.
Mughsail Beach in Salalah, Oman is the final stop on the top 10 list and is one of the most popular beaches of Oman's 2700km coastal stretch. During the wet season the huge waves cause explosions of water through the blow holes at one end of the beach. This coastal beauty is about 45km from Salalah city but is completely worth the trip. Expedia recommends the Crowne Plaza Resort Salahah. Rooms are available from $215 per night.

Locust plague disaster or crispy fried grasshopper feast?

Jason Fowler owns an organic farm on the edge of Broome in North Western Australia.
He also has a restaurant which serves gourmet local produce.
When a grasshopper plague first hit, all he could do was count the cost on his banana and citrus crop.
But one night while cooking sausages for dinner on an outdoor barbecue, an unlucky grasshopper landed on the hotplate.
His first instinct was to flick it off, but that was when inspiration struck.
After trialling a few recipes he put 'Free range crispy fried grasshoppers' on the menu.
While you might think customers would be a bit squeamish, the biggest problem has been catching enough of the insects to meet demand.
Some people just eat the soft abdomen, while others crunch the whole animal.
Jason says the best way to describe the flavour is like a prawn stuffed with grass.
His dogs have been getting in on the act too, fattening up on the jumping snacks.
And some of his neighbours have frozen bucket loads of grasshoppers to use as stockfeed when times get tough.
Jason sees it as a win win for farmers, '...if you start eating them, they'll be eating less of your crops.'

The Town with No Christmas Trees

Broome - the town with no Christmas Trees. Or is it? Recently Broome found itself in a Christmas Tree drought - every tree in Broome had been bought from every shop. But this was not enough to dampen the Christmas Spirit in our small coastal town. Makeshift trees have begun to pop up all around town, including this one in the Mangroves, which appears every year at Christmas time;

The Broome Visitor Centre has also shied away from tradition, putting up our Christmas trees using no more than some twigs and fake snow - but how cool do they look?!

Emergency Services Christmas Lolly Run

Don’t be alarmed if you hear sirens wailing down your street from 3.30pm on Sunday 12 December.
Emergency services will be out in force, not to attend an accident or put out a fire, but to distribute hundreds of lollies to local children as part of the Emergency Services Christmas Lolly Run.

Children in the Broome township will have the opportunity to see emergency vehicles up close as representatives from the Broome Regional Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade and the Broome Volunteer Fire Service, State Emergency Service and St John Ambulance spread Christmas cheer throughout the suburbs.

This is the third year Christine Williams has coordinated the lolly run in Broome.

"Emergency Services volunteers will be decorating their vehicles and Santa will be on hand to help distribute the lollies," said Christine.

"The lolly run is a chance for the community to get to know their emergency volunteers in a relaxed, festive atmosphere rather than in an emergency situation," she said. "Listen out for the sirens and ensure your children safely wait on the verge," said Christine.

Tourism Awards Cover All Seasons

Tourism industry representatives and guests from around the State gathered last night at Burswood Entertainment Complex Grand Ballroom for the prestigious Western Australian Tourism Awards – the State’s highest honours in tourism excellence.

The Gala Dinner, attended by some 900 guests, saw the coming together of the top tourism businesses throughout Western Australia.

The evening, hosted by Linney’s Ambassador and Getaway host Jason Dundas and Channel 9’s Louise Momber, featured a spectacular “Four Seasons” theme complimented by dazzling entertainment.

The tradition of the Brand family’s long standing involvement in the tourism industry in Western Australia continued last night with Lady Brand being accompanied by Dr. Jennie Bickmore-Brand to present the prestigious Sir David Brand Awards.

The Sir David Brand Award for Tourism, recognising the outstanding achievement by an organisation in promoting or servicing the Western Australian tourism industry, was won by Willie Creek Pearl Farm. Jon Jessop, who has had a long association with tourism in Western Australia, won the Sir David Brand Medal for Outstanding Contribution by an Individual and Frances Jones won the Sir David Brand Young Achiever Medal.

Six businesses were inducted into the WA Tourism Hall of Fame having won their respective categories three years in a row. These were Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa, Challenger Institute of Technology – Marine Training Centre Fremantle, Fremantle Prison, Perth City YHA, Surf Life Saving Australia and Willie Creek Pearls.

Tourism Council WA CEO, Graham Moss said that “there had been an increase in the number of entrants into the Eco and Cultural tourism categories. This is pleasing as these tourism experiences are certainly gathering popularity.”

Moss, who is also the Chair of Judges for the Awards, said that “the standard of submissions were especially high this year which positions WA for success in the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards which will be held on the 11th March 2011 in Perth. He said that hosting the National Awards in Perth was a great opportunity to showcase WA tourism to an estimated 600 interstate tourism operators who will attend the Awards.

Today we are forcast for thunderstorms, very exciting! The thunderstorm season is an amazing time of year here - get your cameras out!
